{"id":137,"date":"2018-01-15T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T16:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/?p=137"},"modified":"2018-01-10T09:29:47","modified_gmt":"2018-01-10T17:29:47","slug":"south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness\/","title":{"rendered":"South Fork San Jacinto Wilderness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, the South Fork of the San Jacinto River slips along unnoticed next to the highway that most visitors zoom up to get to the popular mountain town of Idyllwild and the hiking destination of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/san-jacinto-wilderness\/\">San Jacinto Wilderness<\/a>. \u00a0Ribbonwood and manzanita dominate the lower elevations in the San Jacintos and, admittedly, the South Fork of the San Jacinto River watershed (and the Wilderness that protects it) looks pretty unremarkable. However, I was reminded after several visits that sometimes the best gifts come wrapped in plain paper.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The South Fork San Jacinto (SFSJ) Wilderness was designated by Congress in 2009. Lake Hemet lies less than a mile upstream from the Wilderness boundary, so the river itself is normally reduced to a small trickle that has pooled in several areas. The perennial water supply in the canyon has produced a lush woodland with willows, big cone douglas fir, black oak, cottonwoods, and lodgepole pines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-143\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness3.jpg?resize=400%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"photo of a golden cottonwood in fall colors and a hillside of big cone douglas fir in the South Fork San Jacinto Wilderness\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness3.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness3.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness3.jpg?resize=300%2C375&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s not as popular as the nearby San Jacinto Wilderness, the hike on the main trail into the SFSJ Wilderness is incredibly accessible and well-maintained. Over time, the river has carved a deep and surprisingly impressive canyon, and the trail takes you along the rim of the canyon with little to know elevation change for several miles. One can see the full length of the canyon, and the San Jacinto valley to the northwest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-142\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness2.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"photo of the south fork of the San Jacinto River with steep canyon walls and cottonwoods in fall colors\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness2.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a couple of miles, the trail drops via several switchbacks into the bottom of the canyon. The chaparral landscape changes into a rich woodland, with big oaks, lodgepole pines, willows, and boxelders. Many species of birds find refuge here, as do mule deer, mountain lions, and other small mammals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-oak-tree.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-oak-tree.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"photo of five large oak trunks growing out of the ground with willows and a large lodgepole pine tree in the background\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-oak-tree.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-oak-tree.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can continue out of the canyon on the other side of the canyon, eventually summiting Rouse Hill, which is the high point of the west ridge leading from Thomas Mountain, and is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hundredpeaks.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sierra Club&#8217;s Hundred Peak Section list<\/a>. \u00a0However, I feel like the real treasures of this wilderness are not in the big views you would get from a summit, but are hidden in the small spaces of the canyon walls and bottom. One of my favorite things were the lovely chaparral yucca in fall colors covering the hillsides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-yucca.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-140\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness-yucca.jpg?resize=333%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"close-up, detailed photo of chaparral yucca in autumn colors of purple, green, and blue. Admittedly, I was very pleasantly surprised and my expectations were far surpassed; so far, it&#8217;s one of the favorite wilderness areas I&#8217;ve visited for the Wilderness Project. It&#8217;s close enough to urban southern California that it can easily be explored in a day, or even half a day depending on your schedule.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/south-fork-san-jacinto-wilderness4.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\"
