These swaths of land are what some people might call &#8216;uninhabited&#8217; (this term is receiving some rightful pushback) or &#8216;wild.&#8217; Indeed, people from all walks of life can relate to wild nature. In the West at least, most of our wild places are public land. I believe that public lands are as great a unifier as we might find right now given the divided political nature of our country. The Beauty Mountain Wilderness is a great example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Common Ground<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beauty Mountain Wilderness was designated in 2009 as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/111th-congress\/house-bill\/146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omnibus Public Land Management Act<\/a>. Republican Representative Mary Bono Mack from Palm Springs introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/111th-congress\/house-bill\/369\/titles?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Wilderness%22%2C%22Wilderness%22%5D%7D&amp;r=5&amp;s=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">original legislation<\/a>. Her bill also protected parts of other Riverside County Wilderness areas, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/cahuilla-mountain-wilderness\/\">Cahuilla Mountain<\/a>, Agua Tibia, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/chuckwalla-mountains-wilderness\/\">Chuckwalla Mountains.<\/a> In response to the bipartisan-supported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/03\/26\/science\/earth\/26land.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bill becoming law<\/a>, Bono Mack said, &#8220;It gives higher protection to environmentally sensitive, outright beautiful lands that deserve protection.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?w=500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A dried branch an berries from a nearby manzanita plant create a colorful fall color palette.\" class=\"wp-image-249\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?resize=640%2C427&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/manzanita-berries1.jpg?w=1500&amp;ssl=1 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bipartisan support of wilderness has resonated with me for a long time. When I visited Beauty Mountain Wilderness, I spent a few minutes chatting with some horsemen I encountered. We exchanged pleasantries, then I turned the conversation to the Wilderness itself.  &#8220;The trail system is really clean here,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Yep, we put it in and maintain it regularly,&#8221; one of the riders answered. When I returned to the parking area I noticed that the bumper stickers on at least one horse trailer didn&#8217;t necessarily align with my political beliefs. Our common ground often ends up being the stewardship of our public lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, Cahuilla and Luise\u00f1o cultures would have hunted in the Beauty Mountains and camped near their springs. The farther south I go in Riverside County&#8217;s wilderness, I notice that redshanks replaces manzanita as the dominant chaparral shrub. Cahuilla Valley seems to be a major dividing line; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/cahuilla-mountain-wilderness\/\">Cahuilla Mountain Wilderness<\/a> on the north side of the valley these two plants are present in approximately equal proportions. I only saw one other human footprint on my visit. The majority of hikers come to climb one of the range&#8217;s high points&#8211;Tule Peak is accessible by a short day hike, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snwburd.com\/bob\/trip_reports\/beauty_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beauty Peak itself is on the Sierra Club&#8217;s Hundred Peak Section list of peaks<\/a>. This leaves the rest of the. Wilderness for nonhuman animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Beauty Mountains feel surprisingly isolated and wild despite being surrounded by development. On its eastern edge, the Wilderness borders Anza Borrego Desert State Park, making it a major corridor for wildlife coming from the west. The California gnatcatcher and painted checkerspot butterfly live here, as do charismatic megafauna such as deer, bobcat, and mountain lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" width=\"525\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?fit=525%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A rock outcropping receiving sunset light and distant mountains in the background under a blanket of clouds.\" class=\"wp-image-248\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?resize=640%2C960&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alpenglowimagesphotography.com\/wilderness-project\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/beauty-mountains-sunset1.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Million Dollar Spring flows out of the Beauty Mountains and is considered one of the last pristine watersheds in Southern California. It wasn&#8217;t flowing when I visited, but I could imagine the rich density of life that finds refuge in these relatively inaccessible canyons.
