photograph of bighorn sheep pictographs in Nevada's Gold Butte National Monument

Bighorn sheep are a ubiquitous feature of rock art panels in the southwest and this lovely panel, containing hundreds of animals, is no exception. Although it’s unclear where the animals are headed, or what the intention of the artist was, it certainly seems like a good place to seek shelter from the desert sun. Just before making this image, I sought shelter from a rain squall nearby, so I can attest to the protective qualities of the outcrop and alcove!
