antelope ground squirrel, ammospermophilus leucurus

There are several species of antelope ground squirrel in the southwest United States and northern Mexico like this white-tailed variety (Ammospermophilus leucurus), which was photographed in southern Nevada.  Living in hot, arid grasslands, these tiny creatures have the ability to withstand very high body temperatures–well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is unique, even among desert-dwelling mammals.
