The skeletons of creatures that once swam in ancient seas are now preserved in the Permian and Pennsylvanian Limestone of the mountain ranges of the eastern Great Basin. Despite their marine origins, these mountains are now dominated by sagebrush, piñon, and juniper.
One of these remote, desolate mountain ranges is the Egan Range, seen here. In the central part of the Egans, there are two distinct terraces of exposed limestone, the upper one is visible on the left side of this photo. We spent a wonderful afternoon walking the sagebrush between the two terraces–even though the sunset was a bit hazy, the view was impressive nonetheless!
