The last vestiges of Autumn

Written by Alpenglow Images on November 23rd, 2010

Last weekend, we took advantage of some nice fall weather to visit Sequoia National Park (I recently posted another image from that trip here).  It really couldn’t have been nicer weather.  Not only were we wearing t-shirts at lower elevations, but we really enjoyed the brisk temperatures in the Giant Forest.  In addition to some find landscape opportunities, we saw two black bears (which our son absolutely loved).  Not a bad weekend at all.

For me, some of the prettiest scenery was in the area just at the entry of the Giant Forest, where the oaks and other deciduous trees were still hanging on to the final vestiges of fall color.  I spent some time with the big trees one morning, and on my way out, I stopped to photograph this tree, which seemed to be completely ensconced in fall colors.

Since visiting Sequoia, a major winter storm has hit the Sierra, probably (by my best guess) obliterating this beautiful fall color.  Fortunately, we were able to catch the tail end of this great show…

You don’t see much fall color photographs coming out of Sequioa. I really like seeing unfamiliar photographs, at first sight I was going to guess it was Yosemite. Glad you got to see the end of a great show Greg.

I recently had a Greg sighting in Backpacker Magazine! Congratulations.

Nice Greg. I’ll second Steve’s comment that Sequoia is not a place I typically think of for fall color. It’s always great to see a new take on a familiar location. I was last in Sequoia in Jan and it was buried in snow – you’re right it’s probably like that now!

For a Texas boy who doesn’t get that far west…. can you give me some perspective on how big that tree is???

    Great pic too, btw. 😉

    • Thanks, guys, for your comments!

Derrick, these trees can get huge. This particular one was probably about 10-15′ in diameter (they can get up to 50’+ in diameter!) and probably 175′ tall. So, it was really big, but just average as far as Sequoias go…

Steve, thanks for noting the Backpacker sighting! Was it the January or November issue you sighted me in?
